Curatorial comment:
Ali Hussain was nominated by his father Umdat al-Umra, Nawab of the Carnatic from 1795 to 1801 as his heir. Umdat al-Umra was believed to have provided secret assistance to Tipu Sultan and the East India Company demanded the transfer of his lands after Tipu's defeat. Both he and Ali Hussain refused this demand. As a result, the EIC crowned Ali Hussain's cousin, Azim ud-Daula, as the new Nawab. Shortly afterwards, Ali Hussain died, rumoured to have been poisoned by the English. | Ali Hussain est nommé par son père Umdat al-Umra, nabab du Carnatique, de 1795 à 1801, en qualité d’héritier. Comme Umdat al-Umra aurait secrètement aidé Tipû Sultân, la Compagnie des Indes orientales exige le transfert de ses terres après la défaite de Tipû, ce qu’il refuse, comme Ali Hussain.
