Curatorial comment:
This painting illustrates a fighting cock, known by the name 'Malay Cock,' believed to have been introduced to India from Sumatra or Java, and one of the most ancient landraces of poultry originating in Southeast Asia. This appears to have been painted at Lady Gwillim’s Garden House at Santhome in Madras, as the two minarets of the local mosque can be seen in the distance. Behind the rooster can be seen a stable with two horses and a carriage, and a man wearing a white turban and holding a stick. | Coq de combat (« coq malais ») qui aurait été introduit en Inde depuis Sumatra ou Java, et l’une des plus anciennes races locales de volaille provenant d’Asie du Sud-Est. L’image semble avoir été peinte à la maison de jardin de Mme Gwillim, à Santhome, dans le Madras, étant donné qu’on peut apercevoir au loin les deux minarets de la mosquée locale. Derrière le coq, une écurie, deux chevaux, une calèche et un homme au turban blanc tenant un bâton.
