Curatorial comment:
The male and female Asian Koel perch on the branch of the Neem (Azadirachta indica) or Indian lilac. In the background are three large ships, and a small building, likely a temple, among coconut palms. Just below the tail of the female Koel on the left are two birds on a branch, possibly Cormorants, commonly seen along the coast. Elizabeth Gwillim also observed insects and painted them with great accuracy. The dragonfly that the male Koel is trying to catch can be identified as a female Blue Ground Skimmer dragonfly (Diplacodes trivialis). | Les koels asiatiques (mâle et femelle) perchent sur la branche de neem (Azadirachta indica) ou lilas indien. En arrière-plan, trois grands navires et un petit bâtiment, probablement un temple, parmi les cocotiers. Juste en dessous de la queue et à gauche de la koel femelle, deux oiseaux sur une branche, peut-être des cormorans, croisés fréquemment sur la côte. Elizabeth Gwillim a aussi observé des insectes pour les peindre avec grande précision. L’insecte que le mâle koel tente d’attraper pourrait être un percheur crayeux bleu femelle (Diplacodes trivialis).
