This painting may illustrate a scene from William Jones’s translation of a fifth-century drama by the Indian playwright Kālidāsa. Jones’s translation was entitled Śakuntalā; or, The Fatal Ring and published in 1799. | Ce tableau peut illustrer la traduction par William Jones d’un drame du dramaturge indien Kālidāsa (Ve siècle). La traduction de Jones, publiée en 1799, s’intitulait Śakuntalā ou The Fatal Ring.
