Curatorial comment:
In the background is a hilly landscape with palms, and in the far left background the twin gopurams of the Sri Ranganatha Temple, Thiruneermalai atop a hill near Pammal, now Chennai. The three men dressed in white are regarding the bird. According to a letter by Elizabeth Gwillim, they are likely making 'Dandamulus'(=దండములు, in Telugu). Indian mythology likens the Brahminy Kite to Garuda, the vahana or vehicle of the Hindu deity, Lord Vishnu. | À l'arrière-plan, paysage vallonné et palmiers et, à l’extrême gauche, gopuras jumeaux du temple Sri Ranganatha, Thiruneermalai, au sommet d’une colline près de Pammal, puis Chennai. Trois hommes vêtus de blanc observent l’oiseau. Selon une lettre d’Elizabeth Gwillim, ils font probablement « Dandamulus » (దండములు, en télougou). La mythologie indienne apparente le cerf-volant brahmane à Garuda, le vâhana ou véhicule du Seigneur Vishnou, divinité hindoue.
